Gai Monarch was born in June of 1991 on the Gainey Ranch in Santa Ynez, CA. I met him later that year when I was a reporter for KEYT television in Santa Barbara and was assigned to do a story on his unusual beginnings. His dam, Gaishea had just won Champion Halter Mare in both Canada and the United States. Gai Monarch was still nursing at the side of his surrogate mama. At the time embryo transfer was just being introduced to Arabian breeders. This created an interesting story I was able to convince my news director to go after. Gai Monarch's sire is the great Gai Parada. I met him that day too. Mating Gaishea and Gai Parada was in keeping with the Gainey philosophy of breeding 3/4 Gainey bloodlines and 1/4 total outcross. In this case the outcross was Bey Shah. Gai Monarch went on to make his own mark in the show arena. In 1994 he became Cal Bred Champion 3-Year Old Colt, Canadian National Futurity Colt and US Reserve Champion Futurity Colt a feat I was able to witness myself in Albuquerque NM. When the Gainey herd dispersed in the late 1990's Gai Monarch was sold with other Gainey Greats to Petroglyph Arabians. Petroglyph has since dispersed and resructured as well. Gai Monarch died in 2007 at the relatively young age of 16. His line is retained in our breeding program through his son and our reference sire Gai Eminence.
